So we're working on clearing out our storage locker (finally!) and there's all these boxes of stuff that we haven't looked at in years. A lot of it is just trash, and off it went. But there's also several boxes (each) of personal stuff that's accumulated over time. V managed to purge her's down to one box pretty quick, but I was having trouble getting mine to less than two, so yesterday I sat down and went through everything I had left more thoroughly. I quickly tossed lots of stuff that was just piled up (downloaded copies of The Importance of Being Earnest and the 120 Days of Sodom? Bah, it's all public domain, I can download them again if I want....) and had no problem chucking the piles and piles of old class notes (when am I ever going to need to create Cognitive Linguistics Network models again. I mean really). But then I hit the pile of actual 'life stuff' - a huge book full of scraps of writing from high school and my early 20's....an old diary that runs from 1984 to about 1996...manilla envelopes full of letters from girls (all of which say basically the same thing, "it was awesome meeting you, we should get together sometime, please write back, hey why haven't you written back yet, i guess i'm not going to hear from you ..." - I guess I've sucked at correspondence since I learned how to write :S )... a bunch of highschool stuff from the band.... it's crazy. Like my binder of emo poetry, which predates the concept of 'emo' by about 15 years. I've always been ahead of my time. A lot of it is crap (just like modern emo), but that doesn't stop me from thinking 'man, i should type this all up and save it somewhere, so I don't lose it'. Which is ridiculous, because it's been living in a box for like 10 years already, and i look at it every couple and shudder and then put it away again. But I just can't bring myself to throw it out.

Although, reading through my journals, I'm so glad they hadn't invented blogging (or for that matter, the internet) when I was in public and high school. I can't even imagine how terrifyingly embarassing and socially destructive it would be for anyone to have read the crap in there. And the poetry. Even the stuff from my 20s, which is all heavily influenced by Hunter S Thompson and Robert Anton Wilson and Crowley and Hakim Bey and all kinds of anarcho-mystic-freethink, is still pretty lame. So, in the end, most of it went back into the box (I tossed the redundant crap and the stuff that really didn't have any meaning or memory attached to it) for the next time I purge. I expect most of it will survive that too.

Although I did find a folder full of undergrad Philosophy papers. I had forgotten how many A's I got in Philosophy (probably because half of them were B's with the late penalty). THOSE I'm tempted to edit and post up on my LJ. Because several of them I'm really proud of. Particularly my fourth year ones - I have one I did for Imogen Dickie's Phil of Language class on Indexicals and Immunity to Error, and another one I did for Vertin's Metaphysics class on the Sorites Paradox. I re-read them, and man do I sound like I know what I'm talking about. So yeah, maybe that'll be a project later this year, post them all for posterity. It'll be just like how I update my journal once every 6-8 weeks, except without all that useless information on my life.

So I haven't updated in a while. Not being in class or working means that there's a lot of doing the same thing over and over again; fortunately part of that is taking Sophie out to playgroup several times a week, which is pretty fun. Trying to help Veronica with ideas for schoolwork is also good to keep me interested in stuff, although it's not quite the same as working on papers and projects myself. But I had lots of that for years, so maybe that's better anyway.

Birthday party was good, although much quieter than last year. No karaoke, which sucked. Stupid Duke. But pretty much everyone I wanted to see came out, much fun was had all around. Hopefully next year I won't be sickly and sleepy. But much thanks to everyone who was there, it was all good to see you!

Not working is pretty rough, and job hunting is blech. I guess there's about a month's delay when you send out resumes via email, because I hadn't heard anything for weeks...and then in the last couple days I had three calls and an interview, another interview for next week, and a probable followup next week as well. All of which sound like they have some promise - one of them's for a big international expansion team, another one is about breathing some new life into a distribution network. The third one is looking for an SAP expert for a firm that's rolling it out as a new system; I don't have much experience with the program, but I helped with the Ferrero rollout and did some bits of training, so maybe I can consult with them if the other ones don't pan out. I just got to practice some selling myself and make sure I get a salary that can support my massive debt load. Getting something that also compares to Ferrero's "free chocolate" bonus program would also be nice, but we'll see what I can get :P

Anyway, that's the update for now, before i forget to post in this thing for another month or so. Hope everyone else in the blagoblog is doing well.

Hi LJ. How are you? Been a while, yup.

With that out of the way, this is just a general announcement that the November birthday party thing for me n Geoff n Jesse will be a the Duke of Gloucester on Saturday the 17th. Show up around 8ish so we can get tables, because the snug is booked. But it's karaoke night, so good times all around. Should be fun. If you didn't get a personal invite yet, that's because the assorted powers that be (ie me and Hilary) didn't compare lists of people we invited, and each of us assumed you were on the other guy's list. So just show up anyway. The more the merrier. And such.

Ok, i'm sleepy now. /PSA

And taking T3's instead of percacet doesn't quite cover up the sore throbbing like you might expect.
I’ve stolen Joel’s LJ to report that he has now finished his MBA, and to celebrate he got all four wisdom teeth out this morning!!! It was a relatively smooth procedure but he’s going to be a little out of it for the next few days (which will probably not stop us from seeing Spiderman at the imax) as he recovers with some Percocet, T3’s and Soul Calibur with some NERO packet making on the side. If anyone wants to drop by for a visit, just give us a call as we will be at home a lot the next while.

Once he is feeling less like a drugged chipmunk we’ll be looking at having some sort of “I’m done school 4eva!” shindig, which may or may not be around the same time we host folks over for tea n cake to celebrate surviving our second year of parenthood ;)

Please send lots of *hugs* Joel’s way!

~His Sweetie

It's kinda awesome, as far as kids shows go.

And then Vee brought home the newest one last time they were in Ottawa, and it has an episode called Samurai Pie.

OMG!!!!!!!!Best kids show EVAR!

It has samurai.
So my old buddy Helen is at it again. She's been running Thought for Food for years now, and has consistantly managed to mount shows pretty much every year. She's a lot of fun to work with, and maybe I'll even see about stage managing for her this summer (time depending). I got this email from her last night, and I figured hey, I'm people who knows people, so maybe someone out there in the blagosphere needs an acting gig for the fringe. So check it out!

THOUGHT FOR FOOD AUDITION POSTING

Thought For Food will be holding auditions in early April for two shows to be presented this summer.

THE COUSINS OF CORSICA
by Jessica Séguin
Toronto Fringe Festival BYOV production. Show dates: July 5-15
This play will be performed outdoors at Victoria College.

Written in iambic pentameter and rhyming couplets, The Cousins of Corsica is a playful parody of Shakespeare’s comedies. Classical theatre experience is a must.

Roles available:

Julia, princess of Corsica
18-25. Young, but resourceful and intelligent. Think Viola from Twelfth Night, Rosalind from As You Like It and Portia from Merchant of Venice.

Doldomia/Doldomio, her servant
35-45. Loyal, steadfast, parental figure. Could be female or male. Think Kent from King Lear and Boyet from Love’s Labour’s Lost.

Patriclus, son to Ambituoso
20-30. Young, buffoon prince. Generally clueless. Think Sir Andrew Aguecheek from Twelfth Night and Falstaff from Merry Wives of Windsor.

Benedicto, Duke of Verona
25-35. Egocentric but loveable. Tendency to wench and drink. Think Orsino from Twelfth Night and Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing.

Piato, Benedicto’s Fool
35-50. A wise speaking fool who is really a King in disguise. Think Feste in Twelfth Night and Vincentio from Measure for Measure.

Gratiana, Countess of Verona
25-35. Love-struck but intelligent and witty. Think Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing and Kate from The Taming of the Shrew.

Celia, her maid
20-30. A bold, lusty wench. Think Phebe from As You Like It and Margaret from Much Ado About Nothing.

Ambituoso, the usurping King of Corsica
30-40. The villain of the piece. This actor will also double as other characters. Think Antonio from The Tempest and Angelo from Measure for Measure.

THE ALEATORY PROJECT
by Helen Juvonen
Victoria and Vancouver Fringe Festivals.
Ok, so it's early spring cleaning time in Casa de Us Guys, and this week's projects included the computer desk. Turns out we've been collecting way too many old game disks over the years, and now we have to purge. So, in order to maximize the distribution of our stuff, we're turning once again to the blagosphere in order to purge out stuff that maybe someone else will find entertaining.

These are the disks that we want to get rid of. Most of them are the retail copies, although there are a couple of burned ones mixed in. I can't promise that all of them work, but I've played most of them at one point or another, so i'm pretty confident that 60% of the time, they'll work every time.

Lords of Magic
<strike>Heroes of Might and Magic III</strike>
<strike>Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon’s Blade (expansion)</strike>
<strike>Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption</strike>
Shadow Warrior
Soul Reaver 2
<strike>Shogun Total War: Warlord Edition</strike>
Blood Bowl
<strike>Space Hulk</strike>
<strike>SimEarth</strike>
Dracula: Resurrection
Heretic II
Duke Nukem 3D
Dragon Magazine Sampler
Warcraft II campaign pack
100 Great Win 98 Games
<strike>Starcraft</strike>
Quake 2
Stonekeep
Wing Commander deluxe edition
Mixed game disc (incl.
So my evening class got shut down on account of crazy snow happening. Which is a good thing, since poor Sarah got trapped in the snow on her way to drop off Sophie at our place. In fact, the timing was about as perfect as it could get, for a crappy night of snowy badness. Sarah's car stalled right up the street from Rotman, and Vee brought the stroller up from our place pretty much exactly at the time I got Sophie's hat and gloves on. The run through the snow was pretty nutty, and there was a grumpy munchie by the time we got home, but we got home mostly dry and mostly warm, and that was the important part.

And Sarah n Demi got home just fine, which was the other important part.

Adventure abounds.

Reviews:

Blue Man Group: excellent show, but if you missed it it's gone. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed myself, although the entire way through all I could think of was "wow, this is the_caveat's dream job". Closing number - KLF's Last Train to Transcentral - made me very , very happy.

The Order of the Stick board Game: got it for my birthday, playtested it once. Seems like a bunch of fun, requires more tablespace than I expected. The jokes are hella funny if you've read the comic, although I don't know that it will have any real value to people who haven't. Which means get your ass over to The comic and check it out.

Arkham Horror board game: OMG hella fun! Cooperative play makes me very happy, as I am reverse-competative (I can't play GTA because I feel bad every time I steal a car), and rushing around trying to stop the Elder Gods from awakening and consuming humanity is pretty thrilling, even in board game format. Less complicated than it looks to play, too, is appealing. Two pseudopods up!

Holidays: travelling is exhausting, but the families were good, and we got some rest at the hands of eager grandparents. Loot was indeed Phat, but mostly for Sophie (but she needs more stuff than the rest of us, so it's to be expected). It was really nice to see everyone in Ottawa (including the pwneage Anthony suffered at Chrissy's and my hands in HeroQuest), since I haven't been up in ages. And now everyone has their annual post-christmas cold, which means it's pretty laid back in House Slack.

Summary: good times, good times.

So thanks to everyone who made it out on Saturday. I had a great time, from what I remember, although from now on someone needs to put some kind of leash on uberromie before he destroys my liver utterly. Otherwise, though, good friends, amusing karaoke antics, good food....overall a very nice reminder that I have some kind of social life waiting for me when I finally graduate.

Speaking of which, that's as much time as I have for an update, as I now go back to finishing the last bits of work I didn't get to due do Sunday's hangover.

Thanks again, everyone!!

J

PS: my sincerest and most embarassed apologies to anyone who received undue drunken affection from me.
Hey everyone out there in LJ world. So my birthday is coming up soon, and I was hoping to do something low-key and fun the weekend before - so like Saturday the 25th of November. I kinda wanted to do some laser tag, but I'm not sure where there's a convenient place that we don't have to trek out to the middle of nowhere. Anyone has suggestions?

Otherwise, I'm thinking of booking some space at the Duke of Gloucester or the Fox's Den. I'll call and book something, and then post an update with the where's and the when's.

Anyway, presents are entirely unneccessary, although I accept booze at par :)

More to follow!

Ok, short post....but I just have to commemorate this. Vee's parents got us a new tv, after many many years of crappy second-hand ones, and it's pretty sweet. It's really sweet, actually, all flat and digital and shit. Most importantly, though, it has a monitor input. Which means I can plug my laptop into it, which I'm doing now. And then I can steal the cordless mouse and keyboard from the desktop, which I've just done. And then....

.... I can lounge on the couch and check my email on a 32 inch screen.

OMG, technogasm.

Ok, now back to my stupid HR research project :(

We have two, and really don't need the second one.

Also, we have this massive air conditioner (it's like 10,000 btu or something) that we don't have room to store. It needs to be cleaned out, but even dusty it pumps out quite a bit of cold. We've been using it reliably for 7 years now, but without a storeage locker the old girl is going to need a new home. We're moving down to apartment 1115, and our new buzz code is 204 - fortunately our phone number doesn't change at all.

We have the elevator booked for moving big furnature from 4-6pm, but we'll be doing a bunch of loads of boxes and stuff all day. If you want to come help, please come on over! There's lots to do! You can call our phone or the cell (the new # is 416-522-7512 if you don't have it already).

Hopefully we'll see some people out today or tomorrow. Otherwise, you'll all just have to come around and see the new place when we're in!

Yay new place!!!!!!!

SO, if you can come and help, please let me know in the next day or two! Otherwise, thank you everyone who will be around to help shuffle boxes and pack/unpack things on both monday and tuesday.

Also, in cleaning out the apartment, we have an extra VCR and an extra computer monitor.
Hey everyone,

So we’re moving next week. Most of the people to whom this post is addressed already know this. A pile of people have offered at one point or another to come and help out, which is awesome. So here’s the scheduling post!

We have Monday the 18th and Tuesday the 19th to actually move. It looks like we’re going to do the furnature moving in the evening, but we’re going to need help all day both days, for anyone who can help out. We’ll especially need a volunteer for the mornings to take Sophie to playgroup from 10-12 (I’m looking at you, daedamia). Likewise, we’ll need about four strong backs for furnature at around 7ish to 10ish on Monday. Anyone else who can make it during either day to help shuffle boxes and put up shelves and so on – please please come out!

If you can post a little note, if you’re available and want to help, please do so, so we know who we can expect when (and we’ll know how much pizza to pick up for bribes).

Thanks!!
